Dear Friends,

I would like to share something very personal with you. Since I was a young boy I have been blind in one eye. It was a condition that was not diagnosed when I was younger and the muscles in one of my eyes never developed. Consequently, I cannot see out of that eye. Why am I sharing this with you? First, October is National Disability Employment Awareness Month. This is a time to celebrate the many and varied contributions of America's workers with disabilities. Additionally, because Volunteers of America contracts with the Federal Government in a number of different areas, and we must comply with the Office of Federal Contracts Compliance Programs (OFCCP). This office requires that we make a good faith effort to recruit, hire, promote, and retain individuals with disabilities (IWDs), and requires that at least 7% of our workforce self-report as having a disability. 

How does this affect you? I am asking for your help to self-report to our Human Resources Department if you have any of the following disabilities (note that you do not have to provide documentation of diagnosis). Those disabilities include, but are not limited to:

• Blindness • Autism • Bipolar disorder • Post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) • Deafness • Cerebral palsy • Major depression • Obsessive compulsive disorder • Cancer • HIV/AIDS • Multiple sclerosis (MS) • Impairments requiring the use of a wheelchair  • Diabetes • Epilepsy • Schizophrenia • Muscular dystrophy • Missing limbs or partially missing limbs • Intellectual disability         

I want to reassure you that this information is strictly confidential. We are doing this for no other reason that to comply with the OFCCP requirements. We will not use this private information in any other way. I hope you will help. Please consider self reporting to our HR Director, Brandy Winchester

CLS Golf Tournament Check Presentation

Featured Program: Crisis Response

Staff members of our Crisis Response Program work diligently to foster strong relationships with local officials and law enforcement. This was evident when, on July 25, the St. Tammany Parish Deputies' Association in conjunction with St. Tammany Parish Sheriff's Office Reserve Division held the inaugural St. Tammany Parish Suicide Awareness Golf Tournament at Oak Harbor in Slidell. The aim of the event is to help bring awareness to the increasing number of suicides that occur in St. Tammany Parish each year. 

The tournament benefited Volunteers of America Greater New Orleans’ Crisis Response Program, which responds to calls from first responders to prevent suicide by helping persons experiencing a mental health crisis and providing follow-up care coordination. The tournament also benefited St. Tammany Outreach for the Prevention of Suicide (S.T.O.P.S.), which works to reduce the incidence of suicide, and supports families affected by suicide. The inagural event was a great success, and next year's tournament is already in the works!

Put Your Faith Into Action

I often think about the Children of Israel and the fear they must have felt when faced with the decision to flee from the bondage of Pharaoh. Ahead of them were the waters of the Red Sea. Behind them were the armies of Pharaoh. Talk about trouble on every hand! However, this was simply a test of their faith. I am sure for a brief moment the Children of Israel faced the dreadful thought of being captured by Pharaoh’s army or drowning in the Red Sea. What could be worse? Ultimately, their faith in God’s promise outweighed their fears.

Although we live in a different time, life continues to throw daunting challenges our way that sometimes make us feel trapped. The world is filled with dangers – terrorist activities, poverty-stricken nations, and natural disasters that inflict unimaginable loss in our communities. I won’t begin to get into the dangers and calamities that are imposed upon us individually. We all are faced with something that calls our faith into action. 

I would like to encourage each of you to trust God even when there seems to be trouble on every hand. Claim your relationship with God and hold on to His promises. That’s not easy; put your faith into action!

Whether you volunteered to lend a hand at our Elysian Courtyards property or came out for the Folgers Resilience Run/Walk, we thank you for supporting Volunteers of America on the anniversary of Hurricane Katrina. The work we've been able to do in our community over the past ten years would not have been possible without dedicated staff members like each of you. See more photos from the event here.

NOLA Ready

Be Prepared

With hurricane season well underway it can be a good idea to check your supply kit to be sure you have essential items on hand, just in case. And if you haven't yet made your kit, this is your reminder to do so. Here are suggestions for key items to include: 

Food, Water &  Medicine

• Clean containers for water • At least 5 gallons of water per person (which should be enough to last 3 to 5 days) • A 3 to 5 day supply of food that doesn’t go bad • Baby food or formula, if needed • Prescription medications

Safety Items

• First aid kit and instructions • Battery-powered radio & flashlights + extra batteries • Sleeping bags or extra blankets • Iodine tablets to make drinking water safe if needed 

Personal Care Products

• Hand sanitizer and/or Wet cleaning cloths in case you don’t have clean water • Soap • Toothpaste • Hygiene products • Diapers
